YABBA - stands for Young Australians’ Best Book Award. YABBA is a not-for-profit organisation formed in 1985 run by a volunteer committee to: encourage and promote children’s reading of Australian children’s fiction and to develop children into discerning readers, who will express their opinions about books, including voting for their favourites.
The YABBA awards are a children’s choice book award in 4 sections, presented annually.
The sections are:
Picture Story Books
Fiction for Younger Readers
Fiction for Older Readers
Fiction for Years 7-9
Each year:
Children nominate Australian children’s fiction books that have been published in the last ten years to create a short list.
Children vote for their favourite books by a specified date in October,(usually International Children’s Day). The winners are announced at the award ceremony where authors and illustrators receive YABBA citations presented by children.
Currently YABBA is seeking title nominations for the YABBA 2008 shortlist from students across Victoria.
Take the time to download full details of the YABBA program here 08-nominations-2008.pdf
and encourage students to participate by either commenting directly on this blog or by emailing yabbabooks@yahoo.com

Alison Lester’s ‘The Magic Beach’, which conjures so many happy holiday memories, remains one of my favorite Picture Book stories.

What a fantastic concept that the book choices of students across Australia are validated. What we read for (p)leisure says volumes about ourselves!
